Malabar STP Digester Refurbishment Project –

Ongoing Refurbishment of Digesters –

Malabar Sewage Treatment Plant (STP) is located in Sydney’s southern suburbs, and is responsible for processing nearly half of the city’s sewage through its primary treatment processes.

The aim of this ongoing project is to refurbish 4 of the 5 digesters. Each digester refurbishment is completed within 12 months and provides an operational lifespan of 15 years before the next major overhaul.

Collaboration with Sydney Water

Digester roofs (160 tonnes) are completely grit blasted, steel work repaired and a protective coating applied. PET, in collaboration with Sydney Water, developed a strategy combining mechanical lifting devices and custom designed steel supports positioned around the digester to lift the roof to enable repairs and coatings to be carried out unobstructed.

Design technology included:

     computer modelling of existing system
♦ computer modelling of PET designed system
♦ 160 tonne roof lifting assembly design
♦ new roof ballast system design
